Modern Languages

Welcome to the Modern Foreign Languages department! Here, students have the opportunity to learn French and Spanish up to GCSE, as well as discover new languages such as Russian and Italian in extra-curricular clubs.

There are five teachers in the MFL department: Mr Raso (Curriculum Leader for MFL), Mr Black (Deputy Curriculum Leader), Mrs Malone, Mr Moore and Miss Donia. We are also assisted by a Spanish language assistant.

In Year 7 all students have three hours of French lessons each week, and learn about many different topics. In Year 8, students have two hours of French lessons each week and they also begin Spanish and have one hour of it each week. In Year 9, students continue with two hours of French and one hour of Spanish each week. As students move into Years 10 and 11 and begin their GCSE courses, they also have up to three hours a week of MFL lessons. All GCSE French students have the opportunity to work with the language assistant and many students in Years 7-9 also have the chance to develop their spoken French by working with them too.

There are many language clubs that take place during the year. In Years 7-9, there is a weekly MFL club in which students can have the chance to learn a new language, discover French and Spanish games and watch foreign language films and television programmes. In Year 10, students are developing links with a school in Quebec and are corresponding regularly with them by email, and in Year 11 there are weekly GCSE revision classes for all students.

The department is also organising trips abroad and this year there will be a trip to Paris for GCSE students to discover the delights of this city. In the future, who knows where we may be able to take you!
