Curriculum Information for Key Stage 3 students

Welcome to the music department

Aim:
Enable learners to develop fundamental musical skills, increase cultural awareness, demonstrate a high level of collaborative practice and embody the Thamesmead Values. We will also encourage our students to develop a lifelong passion for music as performers, composers and as an audience.

Overview:
We follow a challenging spiral curriculum where key musical concepts, knowledge and skills are gradually built upon, revisited and embedded throughout the 3 years.

What topics will I study in KS3 (years 7, 8 & 9):

Can I study this at KS4?

Yes you can study GCSE Music (AQA Examboard) and we offer a Music Production Course as an extra-curricular subject.

Are there any enrichment opportunities in school?

There are a wide range of extra-curricular activities for students can get involved in including Lower School Choir, Nothing But Treble Vocal Group, Soul Band, Rock Bands, Keyboard Club, Brass Ensemble, Musical Productions Band/Orchestra and Jamming Together.

What could I do/read at home to help myself or where could I visit to help my learning?

We encourage students to listen to a wide range of both recorded and live music. It would also be hugely beneficial for students to learn to play a musical instrument (see the school website for information on how to apply for music instrumental/singing tuition) or join the choir – these can help you in so many ways both musically and in your personal wellbeing.

Get to know the basic elements of music (MAD T SHIRT) and what they mean.
